Do You Live Close To A Meth Lab?

How would you feel if you were told there was a meth lab right next door to your home, but its ok because the police knew about it last year, they just forgot to tell you? That is exactly what happened to the Davidsonville Elementary School last week. This raises an important issue regarding the relationship the local police department has with its community. Do we have a right to know what is going on in our community without having to ask? 12 months is a long time for someone to find out toxic substances were manufactured right next to an elementary school.

Terrible Local Websites

Last week’s Weekend Preview post pointed me towards Becky’s Restaurant and the Pier 7 Marina websites. I am appalled to see professional businesses using free services that look like junk. Google Ads on the side of your web page? This all looks like the internet when it started in back in the early 90’s…in today’s day in age this is inexcusable, I don’t care how cheap you are.

Is Obama Our Candidate?

It seems the tables are turning for Obama. Now only did he win the South Carolina primaries (where he gave an excellent speech btw), but he is now receiving even more support from major media groups and politicians:

Scientology In Annapolis

Time Magazine seems to be unofficially supporting “Anonymous“(video below) in the move to bring Scientology down. This appears to be the second large media group to run an expose piece on the cult since the BBC a year ago. I have been in the area for a long time and don’t remember seeing any Scientology buildings around town. Do we have any locations? Is anyone in the local scene part of this cult? Anyone in the community affected by this group’s nonsense?

Attention All Gossiping Annapolitans and Socialites

At first you might think “is there even enough to talk about in Annapolis that other people will be interested in?” Truth is, small towns generate juicy tid-bits of gossip on all sides that get a lot of people both excited and angry. When is the last time you really pissed someone off? Or how about the last time someone tells you you are wrong, and then a whole community rises in support of you? Annapolis Now is here to make those interactions real!

Facebook Denies Annapolis’ Right to Region

It seems many a proud Annapolitan on Facebook are demanding our town to be recognized as a proper region on the infamous social network. What would “region” status give us?

  • People count: tells you how many other people on the net are proud to live in Annapolis
  • Upcoming events: finally something to add to our so far weak “Weekend Preview”
  • News articles: is Annapolis Now the only site trying to shake up Annapolis? We could find out more…
  • Marketplace: Craigslist is great, but having a dedicated site for our corner of the world is even better
  • Wall: nuff’ said

Calling All Startups!

Annapolis Now is looking for local startups to be featured over the coming months. If you are in the Chesapeake Bay area and think you are the next Google, Facebook or Nanosolar, please let us know. Too many startups think secrecy is the key…we are all about public information, and you should be too! If you are not in tech, thats ok too. Let us know about the new boutique opening up downtown, or the service business you plan to start in the commercial space behind West St.

Weekend Preview: 1/25/08

So the Fed just cut interest rates again which means…you can now spend more and pay less interest over the coming months, woohoo! Here are some things to distract you from upcoming mortgage payments, taxes and anything else you can throw a stick at:

Illegal Immigrants

The Capital Online touched upon another soft spot in Annapolis…illegal immigration. The author of the article keeps reiterating we must ask ourselves why…why they are here. Survival and a desire to succeed, thats pretty obvious. Here is a short list of the types of impact illegal immigrants have in our lives:

Leaving The Kids Alone This Weekend? Think Again!

Both shocking and completely hilarious, one of our Aussie brothers has just raised the bar for teenage debauchery. Did any of you do this in your earlier days in Annapolis? Any parents out there want to share war-stories? How would Anne Arundel police react to this…definitely a spectacle to talk about!
