We are sad to report another business has gone the way of the failure. Sweet Dreams Pastry Shop in Clock Tower Place off of Forest Drive began two years ago as a supposed breath of fresh air to the local pastry scene. The formidable pastry chef, Chris Kujala, who used to head Washington DC’s Kinkead’s dessert offerings worked side by side with his wife trying to make their mark on the Annapolis sweet-tooth scene. Perhaps there were too many cavities or not enough hungry mouths to feed, but Sweet Dreams is effectively shut down. For how long, we do not know. What we do know is that a replacement is on its way, quicker than we would imagine.

Tucked away next to a seedy looking liquor store on Forest Drive, Restaurante Serrano serves up this side of the Chesapeake’s most authentic Mexican food. This place definitely caters to the local Latino population and it shows. Upon entering the restaurant, you can either turn left and sit in a bright salon watching cheesy Mexican soap operas on TV, or turn right and eat in a sterile room that is beyond eyesight of the main room. I suspect the gringo’s out there ( that means Americans) would most likely turn right…but if you want to be adventurous and start living in 2008, turn left.

Brian Gill at the Red Maryland blog posted last week about the many reasons why businesses are failing in downtown Annapolis, and what can be done to help them.
Oh how we love seafood in Annapolis. Fruit of the sea they call it, or at least thats what we used to call it when the oceans actually had fish. Did any of you check the menus last time you ordered seafood? Are you sure it was from the sea? Are you sure the Maryland crab cakes were from Maryland, and not Thailand?
What a cool citrus inspired sorbet does for your palate in the middle of a nine-course tasting menu, downtown Annapolis’ Osteria 177 does for the local restaurant scene. I know… another Italian restaurant in Annapolis? But this one actually does nail the bulls’ eye straight on.
Having eaten there for many meals over the past year, I thought it pertinent a proper review of this gem should kick-off AnnapolisNow.com. The corner location of Osteria makes it stand out amongst the myriad storefronts of touristy trinkets and bland food. What used to be a kitschy Chinese/Japanese restaurant has been transformed into what should be called Annapolis’s first modern dining establishment.
